JD Walter's beautiful and tender composition is arranged here in a four-part a cappella setting fit well for both traditional choirs and contemporary vocal groups. Walter dedicated this piece to his adopted mother who took him in at the age of one and, as a musician herself, raised him with a love for music, which he learned could be his escape from the troubles of the world. “She nurtured me musically and helped me find my space of intimacy as a sensitive child,” JD says.
A few brief lyric solo moments for a baritone or tenor are utilized, and the ensemble supports wordlessly in those moments, as well as in the introduction and a sweeping development section halfway through. A rubato approach would be best in live performance, guided by a conductor, but the piece is notated in such a way (with mixed meter, phrase extensions and other techniques) that even performing (or recording) the arrangement using a click track should give the phrasing a natural flow.
